Heel pain in the morning and plantar fasciitis

The first steps out of bed tell us a lot.

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is irritation of the thick band under the foot. It causes heel pain in the morning that eases as you walk, then returns after sitting.

What helps

Calf and foot strengthening, load changes, taping and hands-on work. Flat feet or a tight calf often play a part.

Ankle sprains, weak ankles and ankle instability

Sprained ankle

Ligaments stretch or tear, usually on the outside of the ankle. Early motion and load help recovery.

Ankles that keep rolling

Weak ankles and ankle instability follow poor balance after a sprain. Balance and proprioception training retrains the reflexes that guard the joint.

Recovery after a fracture or walking boot

Stiffness, swelling and a weak calf follow weeks in a boot. We rebuild motion, strength and walking. See post-surgical rehab if you had surgery.

Achilles tendinitis and shin splints

Achilles pain behind the heel, Achilles tendinopathy, builds with running, jumping or a sudden jump in activity. Slow, heavy calf loading is the core treatment. Shin splints are aching along the inner shin that begin with more mileage than the legs are ready for. For both we adjust training and check your running form. Athletes can read Sports Injury Rehab. Knee trouble that travels with it is on Knee Pain.

Shoes, flat feet and how we treat

Footwear matters, but it is only one piece. A shoe change will not fix a weak calf.

  • Shoe advice and, when it makes sense, supports for flat feet
  • Foot and ankle strengthening, balance and proprioception training
  • Gait analysis, kinesiotaping, hands-on manual therapy and IASTM for tight calves and the foot
  • Dry Needling and the deep tissue laser when they fit

Numbness or burning in both feet?

Both feet is a different problem from one sore heel. See Peripheral Neuropathy. If dizziness or unsteadiness comes with it, read vestibular and balance care.
