Cupping Therapy
Cupping therapy, which our therapists call myofascial decompression, uses cups on the skin to create suction that lifts the skin and the connective tissue beneath it. It is a physical therapy approach focused on fascia and movement. PAR Physical Therapy offers cupping in Myrtle Beach and Murrells Inlet, South Carolina.

Cups on the skin, with and without movement
Cups are placed on the skin, and negative pressure creates the suction. They can sit still for several minutes, usually 5 to 15 minutes in all, or be applied while you actively move, for example stretching, squatting or moving your shoulder. Your therapist may also use a glide or a pop technique.
It is often built into your rehab exercises. Cupping is not the same as the scraping tools used in instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization.

What the treatment is aiming for
Freer fascia
Improve the mobility of fascia, the connective tissue, and reduce movement restrictions.
Better movement
Restore functional movement patterns and address pain during specific motions.
Less tension
Reduce muscle tension and promote relaxation.
What cupping feels like, and the circular marks
Expect a stronger stretch or pulling sensation, especially while you are moving. This works to either inhibit or facilitate muscle groups.
Cupping often leaves circular marks that may look like a bruise. This is common and expected.
Who tends to get cupping
Your therapist decides whether it fits after an evaluation.
- Limited range of motion
- Injury rehab, such as shoulder, back, neck or knee problems
- Scar tissue or fascial restrictions
- Athletes and active people
Tell us before cupping if
- You take blood thinners
- Your skin is fragile
- You have an active skin condition in the area
Cupping alongside the rest of your plan
Cupping is used with, not instead of, exercise and manual therapy. Visits typically last 30 to 60 minutes with the same therapist each time. You do not need a physician’s referral to be evaluated by a physical therapist in South Carolina. PAR accepts most insurance plans, and we make every effort to verify your benefits before your first visit. Same-day appointments are possible.
