Neck Pain

Neck pain is pain or stiffness in the neck that sometimes spreads into the shoulders, upper back or down the arm. Desk posture, phone use, sleep position, arthritis and whiplash are common reasons, and physical therapy treats both the neck and what keeps loading it. PAR Physical Therapy treats neck pain in Myrtle Beach and Murrells Inlet, South Carolina.

Tech neck, text neck, whiplash and other causes

Desk work and tech neck

Hours of looking at a screen or phone lets the head drift forward. People call it tech neck or text neck, and it overloads the muscles at the back of the neck.

Whiplash

A fast back-and-forth motion, such as in a car crash, can strain the neck and cause pain that builds over days. See car accident care.

Arthritis

Wear in the neck joints causes stiffness, often worse in the morning. See arthritis and joint pain.

Pinched nerve in neck

Cervical radiculopathy happens when a nerve root is squeezed, which can cause arm pain, numbness or tingling.

A stiff neck, a crick in your neck, and pain radiating down the arm

A crick in neck muscles after sleeping awkwardly often settles in a few days. Neck and shoulder pain that stays, or neck pain radiating down arm with numbness or tingling, is worth an exam. Your therapist checks which neck levels and nerves are involved and how your shoulders and upper back move. Shoulder trouble that began in the neck is covered on Shoulder Pain.

Tingling in the hand can also come from the wrist. If your fingers go numb at night, compare it with Carpal Tunnel.

Headaches and jaw pain that start in the neck

Tight upper neck muscles often feed head and jaw pain.

Headaches

A headache at the base of the skull can come from the neck joints and muscles. Read headaches and migraines.

Jaw

Neck posture also affects the jaw. See TMJ and jaw pain.

After a head injury

Neck pain with dizziness after a hit to the head is covered on Concussion.

Treatment and workstation setup

Treatment pairs hands-on care with training, so the relief has something to stand on.

  • Gentle manual therapy and cervical joint mobilization for stiff segments
  • Deep neck flexor strengthening, the small muscles that hold the head over the spine
  • Posture restoration and ergonomic training: screen height, chair, phone habits and how you sleep
  • Dry Needling for stubborn trigger points, when it fits
  • A digital home exercise program you can do at your desk

Go to the ER or call your doctor if

  • Neck pain follows a fall or crash
  • You feel dizzy or your vision changes when you move your neck
  • Arm weakness is getting worse
