Pelvic Floor Therapy
Pelvic floor therapy is physical therapy for the muscles at the base of the pelvis that support the bladder, bowel and uterus or prostate. It treats leaking, pain, pressure and weakness in women and in men. Because pelvic health is a specialty, call our clinics in Myrtle Beach and Murrells Inlet, South Carolina to ask whether a therapist on our team treats it.

What the pelvic floor is
Your pelvic floor is a hammock of muscles from the tailbone to the pubic bone. These muscles hold in urine and stool, support the pelvic organs, work with the core and the hips, and play a role in sexual function. Like any muscle group, they can be weak, too tight or poorly coordinated. A weak pelvic floor or pelvic floor dysfunction is common. Pelvic floor physical therapy, which many people search as pelvic floor PT near me, teaches those muscles to work well again.

All ages, all genders.
- Women before and after childbirth

Why Kegels alone are not always the answer
Kegels strengthen the pelvic floor. Not everyone needs strength.
Some people need to relax
If the muscles are already tight, more squeezing makes pain, urgency and leaking worse. Those people need to relax the muscles, a skill called down-training.
Some people need coordination
Others need strength with breathing and the core working together, and a plan for bladder and bowel habits.
How we know
A pelvic floor assessment finds which you need. Back and hip problems can add to it. See Back Pain.
What a first visit should be like
Many people feel hesitant, so we want you to know what to expect.
- A private room and a conversation first, about symptoms, habits and goals
- Your consent at every step. An internal exam is always optional
- Education about how the pelvic floor, breathing and core work together
- Treatment such as pelvic floor muscle training, biofeedback, hands-on work (external or internal), relaxation or down-training, and bladder and bowel retraining
- A home plan you can do privately
